CAVE BIRD'S NESTS
The cave category means the bird's nests are harvested naturally from the stone caves along the coast line of North Borneo (Sabah& Sarawak). These nests are produced naturally by the wild swallows of North Borneo. They feed on food found naturally in the forests, such as worms, insects, fishes, frogs etc.Because of their diet is of natural type, they are much healthier and produce healthier, nutritious bird's nests (saliva of the swallow) which can be seen as distinguish thick, moist, tough. Some bird's nests are also colored due to the combination of the saliva and minerals exist naturally in the cave. Some caves have higher mineral contents and tends to give rise to golden yellow color bird's nest and some give rise to dark red color bird's nest(the Bloody Bird's Nest). So there are 3 types of bird's nests :- White, Golden Yellow and the Bloody bird's nests.
HOUSE BIRD'S NESTS
The House (Man Made) bird's nests are produced by artificial method of breeding the swallows in a man made house or "Cave". The swallows are "tamed" by men and fed mainly on corns, wheat, and some insects given by the keepers. Because of the nature of their diet and the "restricted" life style. They are less healthier than the cave swallows and produce thin, drier, smaller bird's nests. Since there is no minerals to combine with the saliva, the white bird's nests are mainly produced.
ARTIFICIAL COLORING
Modern house bird's nest producers are a little overboard at times by mixing some kind of coloring agent such as carrot (carotene) color with these white bird's nests to give rise to "almost similar" Golden Yellow Bird's Nests which are more popular than the white bird's nests in certain part of Asia. But these artificial coloring can easily be checked by soaking the bird's nest in water for just 2 hours and the color will be separated from the bird's nests. The actual Golden Yellow cave bird's nests do not have this problem.
TRADITIONAL METHOD OF CLEANING
The process of cleaning the feathers from the bird's nests are very important since the feathers and other impurities (leaves, tree debris) are dirt and unhygienic. The traditional method of cleaning employed by our company is still the best way to do the job though it is much tedious and time consuming. Workers will soak a sample of the raw bird's nest in a bowl of clean water for 1-2 hours before picking the coast feathers and debris out of the sample. This is follow by using a pair of fine tweezers to pick up the fine feathers which are almost invisible to the eye sight. This is the most difficult step as a lot of concentration cum good eye sight need to be used here. Once done, the bird's nest sample is put in an oval shape mould before putting into a drying oven for drying.
MODERN BLEACHING METHOD
Some modern producers can "speed up" the cleaning process by using chemical bleaching process employing bleaching agent such as chlorine to "remove" (rather to camouflage) the fine feathers. Naturally, this process is much quicker and much more economical, but the quality of the final product is inferior and the nutritional content(partly due to denaturalization of the protein in the bird's nests) is largely discounted. Asthmatics who take this bleached bird's nests might get frequent asthma attack. The final product from this bleaching is also distinguishable by its look under bright day light. They are much "whiter"" than the actual white bird's nests which are slightly off-white or creamy white.
YEN CHAN BIRD'S NESTS
This is exotic, naturally produced bird's nests with little or almost no feathers on the nests. The cleaning process is easier and quicker since there is little feather to pick. Generally, this type of bird's nests have the distinguish shape of a typical Bird's Nests. There are also three types :: white, Golden Yellow and Bloody. Since the bird's nests are rare and difficult to find, they are extremely expensive. Some consumers are more keen to purchase this type of bird's nest because there is less chance of getting fake bird's nest.
