People might still remember vividly the country-wide power failure in July 1999 and the 921 earthquake. At that moment, a number of passengers were bound in elevators. Some of them tried to extricate from elevators so they opened the door directly without any consideration. Unfortunately, elevators stopped between two floors, the passengers might fall down to machine holes and get injured. Especially in family-style elevators, if passengers encounter the above-mentioned situation and not have anybody around to ask for help, well-designed, self-rescue system can help them to save themselves.
According to the Elevator Association of R.O.C.'s statistics, the main reasons for elevators to get broken and bound people inside are: 8% of power failure,

92% of other reasons, such as improper management or operation and ill-defined safety switch actions.
