A fresnel lens applied in a projection system to collimate light through the fresnel lense panel, provide significantly superior corner illumination and enhance overall display luminance uniformity, it also helps to eliminate hotspot. Usually it is used with other micro prismatic components(such as lenticular lens).

一旦光学系统中需要较大尺寸透镜，通常采用菲涅尔透镜。普通玻璃透镜如果直径超过3或4英寸（76mm或100mm）时，制造成本就相当可观。如果是应用在显示系统中，还需要考虑透镜重量和所占空间都不能过大这些因素。菲涅尔透镜可以做出很平薄，用塑料材料，以体积轻便，成本低廉成为传统透镜的替代品。

也不是所有大尺寸光学显示应用都适合应用菲涅尔透镜。因为菲镜特定结构表面（光损失），以及塑料材料热机械性能的限制，导致其精度无法达到某些科技要求，如天文设备中通常需要大尺寸透镜。但是菲涅尔透镜在显示应用中则相当完美。

菲涅尔透镜被证明最佳应用就是在投影系统中，其作用就是准直光线和聚焦光线。菲涅尔透镜将光源发出的束光源调整为平行光，显着提高显示面板四周亮度，消除了太阳斑效应，从而提高整体显示亮度均匀性。通常菲涅尔透镜与其他显示元件（如柱面镜）一起使用。
